Andalucia’s Eastern Coast Glorious hills and mountains, pretty beaches and coves, the azure waters of the southern Mediterranean and a wonderful sub-tropical climate – what else do you need for a walking holiday in the sunshine? Andalucia’s eastern coast (known as the Costa Tropical) is all this. Your base is the coastal city of Almunecar where the sierras plunge spectacularly into the sea and you will find no less than 25 beaches and coves within the boundary of the municipality. It is a city whose Phoenician, Roman and Moorish past is still much in evidence. Granada is only 45 miles away and you have an included visit to the last city to be surrendered by the Moors in 1492.

details
- 7 nights hb in Almuñecar, on the Costa Tropical
- Two coastal walks
- Mountain walk near white-painted Frigiliana
DAY ONE: Flight to Malaga and transfer to your hotel (55 miles) in Almunecar on the beach east of the city for seven nights half board accommodation.
DAYS TWO TO SEVEN: During your stay, there are three included walks.
Walk 1: Short transfer (4 miles) to the starting point, just outside town. You walk via gorges, cliffs and coastal paths along beaches and coves, passing ancient watchtowers and with excellent views as you go. Your destination is the old town of Salobreña, where there is time to have lunch and explore. The walk is 5 miles, 150m of ascent/descent, approximately 3 hours walking. The terrain is a mix of rough trails and road walking, steep ground in parts.
Walk 2: 10-mile coach transfer to your start point at Playa Canuelo, from where you walk along the old coastal route to La Herradura. This walk includes a visit to the Watch Towers of La Caleta and Cerro Gordo en route, a stop at a beach-side cafe for coffee in Playa Cantarrijan, one of the most beautiful beaches on the coast. The walk continues through the Maro Cliffs Nature Reserve where you may see Ibex (wild mountain goats which grow up to 14 stone in weight). You stop for lunch in La Herradura before catching a local bus back to Almunecar. From there you walk for a further hour along the promenade to our hotel. This walk is 7 miles in all and the terrain is a mix of rough trails and road walking. Steep ground in parts. Ascent/descent is 250m. 4 hours walking.
Walk 3: Coach transfer to Frigiliana, 16 miles away, for your circular walk in the hills behind this pretty white-painted village. The walk takes you to the top of Cerro Felix (540m) with the most stunning views of the Mediterranean, Nerja and Frigiliana. The route follows the old mule routes laid down over centuries in the Sierra Almijara Natural Park, a protected area of 44,000 hectares home to ibex, wild boar, vultures and eagles. The route is all cross country on rough trails with steep ground in many parts. 8 miles, 400m of ascent and descent. 4 hours walking.
There is also an included full-day excursion to the wonderful city of Granada. There is surely no more spectacular setting than Granada, whose extraordinary Alhambra complex is dominated by the snow-capped peaks of the Sierra Nevada. A local guide will ensure you make the most of your visit of the Alhambra and the Generalife Gardens. (Please note that, due to restrictions on group visits, the Nasrid Palaces part of the complex may not be included in the visit.) As well as visiting the complex, you will also have plenty of time to see some of the city’s other attractions such as the cathedral and the old Moorish quarter of Albaicin, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the Alhambra and the Generalife. The rest of your time is free to enjoy Almunecar.
You can visit the Arab fortress built on top of a Roman castle or stroll through the delightful botanical gardens of Majuelo Park where there is a huge collection of tropical and subtropical plants, bushes and trees as well as the remains of the Roman fish-salting pits. Other attractions include the exotic bird park and the network of defensive towers built by the Moors and later strengthened in the 18th century as defence against British raids. Or just stroll through the busy commercial district in the old centre where you can admire the city’s monuments – look out for the plaque dedicated to Laurie Lee who spent time here during and after the Civil War.
DAY EIGHT: Free time until your transfer to the airport and your return flight home.
Extend your holiday – extra week available in Taramay.

A wonderful holiday. The Walking Guides and Tour Director Manuel were excellent. Wished I had gone for two weeks!
The holiday (our 2nd time) at this resort was excellent. Our rep and driver are wonderful! nothing was too much trouble. The excursions, particularly the Alpujarras, were excellent. On the whole a first rate holiday in a very peaceful resort.
What an excellent holiday! The hotel Bahia Tropical was excellent and the food was very good. The Preferred Travel Staff were excellent and totally efficient as were the walking guides. This is about the 8th Walking holiday I have had with Preferred Travel.
We have just returned home after our 6th walking holiday with Preferred Travel Services. We have had a fabulous time and couldn’t fault any of it. The hotel was excellent, the food really good and staff very helpful. Our representative was very good and our walking guide was absolutely brilliant and helped to make the holiday very memorable. Almunecar is an excellent resort. Thanks Preferred for providing such excellent holidays. We constantly sing your praises to everyone we meet. Looking forward to many more holidays with Preferred Travel.
Coastal Walks afforded excellent views. The walk in the hills was the highlight of the week especially, the walk through the Gorge at the end. Another great holiday! Thank you.
This was the first time we have been on a walking holiday with Preferred Travel Services and will certainly consider more in the future. We found the availability of the "second week" attractive as by then we had a good grasp of the geography of the area and were able to complete a number of other coastal and hill walks on our own.
