Berlin, Potsdam & The Harz Mountains

8 Days from £799 | July

The scenery and geology of the Harz Mountains, the medieval history amid the half-timbered houses of Goslar and Quedlinburg, the ‘iron curtain’ history of East Germany and Berlin, and the stunning new capital city that is emerging! What a combination – but it doesn’t stop there! You have to add in the splendour of the imperial city of Potsdam, and a tour around the Harz Mountains, to begin to grasp the picture of this unique holiday.

  • 3 nights bb Berlin, 3 nights Goslar (1hb & 2bb), 1 night bb Potsdam
  • Sightseeing tour of Berlin, Walking tour of Goslar, Tour of Potsdam
  • Tour around the Harz Mountains
  • Visits to Wittenberg and Quedlinburg

Day One: Flight to Berlin, short transfer to your hotel for three nights’ bed and breakfast accommodation. Berlin’s Checkpoint Charlie, Brandenburg Gate and Jesse Owens’ Olympic Stadium spring immediately to mind, but this is also a thriving, newly European capital city with emblematic buildings such as the new Bundestag – well worth a visit (advance online registration required)! Berlin is also home to some of the best museums around – all conveniently clustered together on Museum Island – such as the marvellous Museum of Antiquities and the recently reopened Neues Museum, with its wonderful Egyptology Collection.

Days Two And Three: There is a half day city sightseeing tour. The rest of your time is free for you to explore the city and visit some of the wonderful museums. Your Tour Director will assist with plans.

Day Four: You leave Berlin and travel through the former East Germany to Wittenberg where, in 1517, Luther famously nailed his “95 Theses’’ to the door of the Castle Church – challenging the teachings of the Church and the authority of the Pope.

Today you also stop in picturesque Quedlinburg (like Wittenberg, also on the UNESCO World Heritage list), a maze of cobbled streets and quaint fairy-tale houses, overlooked by its 16th-century castle, before continuing to Goslar for three nights’ accommodation, with dinner included this evening. 190 miles today.

Goslar is also on the UNESCO World Heritage list, thanks to its old town of decorated half-timbered houses, and was an important seat of the Holy Roman Empire – the Imperial Palace was founded in 1040, but reconstructed in the 19th century.

Days Five and Six: You are free in Goslar with an included walking tour of Goslar and an included excursion around the Harz Mountains. This is a circular tour of 62 miles around the mysterious Brocken, the highest mountain in the Harz, where witches convene every April 30th riding on broomsticks and goats. First, you make a short stop in the neat spa resort of Bad Harzburg before climbing up to Torfhaus from where there are views across to the top of the Brocken and its tv mast, originally built to broadcast the 1936 Olympics. Crossing the old iron curtain border, you make a short stop in the pretty mountain village of Schierke (something you couldn’t do before 1989 without a special visa) before continuing to the charming old town of Wernigerode where you have free time for lunch and to explore.

Day Seven: You leave the Harz and travel to Potsdam for a sightseeing tour of the city. The lakes and rivers contrast beautifully with the numerous palaces and castles – such as the Cecilienhof (which hosted the 1945 conference where the United States, Russia and Britain decided on the post-war future of Germany) and the UNESCO-listed Sanssouci Palace, in its enormous park. The walled-off “Forbidden City”, with its Russian villas, was once controlled by the KGB, and gives an insight into Cold War Potsdam. One night’s bed and breakfast accommodation has been reserved for you in Potsdam. 155 miles today.

Day Eight: Free time until your transfer to the airport and your return flight.

We enjoyed this taster of Germany. The itinerary and tours were well planned and interesting. The guide was very knowledgeable and added value to our holiday. He provided excellent background information on the history, literature, buildings and social development. Would recommend this holiday and will look at other tours from Preferred Travel Services for the future.
