  • 7 nights hb in Platanias
  • Walking tour of Chania
  • Visit to Souda Bay WWII cemetery and Roman Aptera
  • Excursion to the Gonias Monastery and olive oil and wine tasting
  • Tour to the West Coast

Day One: Flight to Chania. 40-minute transfer to your hotel in Platanias for seven nights half board accommodation.

Day Two: At leisure in Platanias. Seven miles west of Chania, Platanias is a busy resort with a long beach, small harbour and interesting old quarter with fine views over the coast.

Days Three to Seven: There are three included excursions.

Chania, Souda Bay & Aptera: The tour starts with a 30-minute drive east to the ancient village of Aptera. The site has been occupied for nearly 3,500 years and there are remains of a Roman theatre, 12thcentury monastery and an Ottoman fortress. There are wonderful views across Souda Bay where you head next for a short visit to the Allied War Cemetery on the water’s edge, final resting place for 1,500 casualties of the Battle of Crete in 1941. You then continue to Chania for a tour of Crete’s most pleasant city. During a guided walking tour you see the covered market, the Venetian harbour with its Turkish mosque, and the Jewish, Christian, and Muslim quarters of the city.

You then have free time for lunch before returning to Platanias in the early afternoon. Or you can stay on in Chania and make your way back on the local bus. Just 34 miles on the coach today.

Gonias Monastery, Olive Oil and Wine: Your first visit is a guided tour of the fortified Gonias Monastery in an ideal spot at the foot of the Rhodopos Peninsula. Within the walled complex are monks’ cells, refectory and stores, and a superb collection of icons in the church. Inland from here is the Vouves olive tree. Estimated to be 4,000 years old, it still bears fruit and has its own museum! From this ancient spot you continue to a modern olive oil and wine estate for a tour and tasting. You have free time for lunch in the pleasant coastal village of Kolymbari before returning to Platanias. 35 miles today.

west along the coast, you turn inland and follow the mountain road to Polyrenia from where there are panoramic views down to the sea. Now it’s just a small village, but you will see scattered ruins which are evidence of the former importance of the ancient city of Polyrenia from the Dorian period through to Roman times. From here your route takes you through green, lush but spectacular scenery through the Topolia Gorge, and over the mountains down to the white-painted Chrisoskalitissa Convent perched on a 120 ft rock above the Libyan Sea. Its name means ‘golden-stepped’, and if you can manage the 98 steps to the top you will be rewarded with a fabulous view. It’s then just a ten-minute drive to the pink sand of Elafonissi where you have free time to grab a snack and wade in the lagoon. 100 miles today.

During your free time, you can take the regular bus into Chania, join an optional excursion, or just spend time in Platanias.

Day Eight: Free time until your departure for the airport for your return flight home.

Please note: there is a local tourist tax of 3 euros per room per night. It is not included in the price of your holiday and will be payable by hotel guests directly to the hotel.

This is a new holiday. Comments below arise from other holidays we have operated to Crete.

PTS

Wonderful holiday! Excellent hotels. Good facilities and food - both in excellent position. The Cretan people employed are wonderful, pleasant, friendly and willing. From the representative who met us at the airport to the wonderful coach driver who drove us so safely and expertly and our amazing Tour Guide whose knowledge and love of her Cretan culture helped immerse us in all things Cretan. How she managed to remember and impart so much knowledge in a totally Impeccable English accent, was truly incredible. Gratitude is well deserved.

Miss C, Merseyside

Had a wonderful holiday with unforgettable experiences and sights.

Mrs C, Leeds

This has been our first ‘Guided’ holiday and I don’t think it will be the last. Preferred Travel Services had planned a varied and very interesting week. We’ve seen far more of Crete than we would have by travelling alone. Well done PTS!

Mrs G, Derby

Joanna, our Tour Director’s knowledge of all things Cretan is exceptional. History, Geography, Flora and Fauna, etc – she was MOST informative. We leave knowing a great deal more than when we arrived. Mr & Mrs E, Roxburghshire.

Mrs E, Roxburgh

I thought you might like to know what we thought of our recent holiday in Crete with your company…… Wonderful! This is our third holiday with you and we have enjoyed them all equally. Could I mention our infallible guide, whose knowledge was so entertaining.

Mrs H, Neath
