The High Pyrenees

8 Days from £749 | September

Mountain air, fertile valleys, spectacular peaks, and great hospitality! The Pyrenees are a walkers’ paradise. After two nights on the coast in Catalonia, you travel to the small principality of Andorra and the village of Soldeu, perched at over 1600 metres amid wonderful mountain scenery and with great walking right on the doorstep. We have two included guided walks from Soldeu, and will also take you across the border into France for a walk near Ax-les-Thermes in the scenic Ariege region. After four nights in Soldeu, you travel a different road back to sparkling, cosmopolitan Barcelona for the last night of your holiday.

  • 2 nights hb on Catalan coast, 4 hb in Andorra, one bb in Barcelona
  • Visit to Montserrat
  • Three guided walks in the Pyrenees

DAY ONE: Flight to Barcelona or Reus. Transfer to your coastal hotel, just under an hour away, for two nights half board accommodation.

DAY TWO: Free day in resort.

DAY THREE: Today you travel into the mountains towards Andorra, stopping en route at Montserrat with its spectacular rock formations, and monastery, founded in the 10th century. From there you travel through the Catalan countryside via the little towns of Calaf and Ponts, into the High Pyrenees and your hotel in the mountain village of Soldeu, where you have four nights half board accommodation. The journey time is approx four hours excluding stops.

Soldeu is a scenic mountain village, with a few shops, bars and restaurants. There is a cable car, which normally operates from July to September, and serves Europe’s highest golf course (9 holes, 2250 metres up, cable car access only). Guest tickets and club hire are available to visiting club members from elsewhere.

DAYS FOUR TO SIX: In Soldeu, Andorra, from where you have three walks, two in Andorra and one in France.

Walk 1: Grau Roig and the Pessons Lakes. There are 22 lakes all in all, surrounded by wonderful mountain scenery. You will see the first seven as you climb 400m in 2½ hours. The path is stony; the last part of the return walk is by the same route so if anyone wishes to do a shorter walk they can retrace their steps and wait for the rest of the group on the terrace of the bar/restaurant by the first lake.

Walk 2: The Ariege Pyrenees. For your second walk you travel over the Pass of Envalira and down the wooded Ariege Valley to Ax-les-Thermes in France. The route is circular, starting and finishing in front of the Casino. You climb 300m up the side of the valley, and pass close to the villages of Ascou (site of the oldest settlement in the valley), Sorgeat, and Ignaux (3 hours walking approx.). After the walk you will have free time in this pretty spa town, which has a thermal free-access bath by the hospital in the Town Square – a wonderful place to revive your feet after the walk!

Walk 3: The Incles Valley. From the hotel, you follow a pleasant path as you climb through the woods towards Siscaro Lake: there are fine views across the valley as you go. After a rest there, you continue up towards the Pas de la Vaca and return to your hotel. This walk is rather more challenging than the other walks in this brochure, reaching 2400m, with a possible climb of 700m. Your guides will be happy to advise you if you prefer to do something else today – perhaps the gentler, well-signposted ‘Cockerel Trail’ towards Canillo village and the lovely modernist Meritxell Church. They also reserve the right to change the return route of the walk, returning via the bottom of the Incles Valley instead of over the Pass.

DAY SEVEN: After breakfast you leave Andorra and head via the Cadi Range and the Llobregat Valley towards Catalonia’s capital, Barcelona for one night’s bed and breakfast accommodation. You have a short orientation tour, and free time for lunch and sightseeing.

DAY EIGHT: Free time until your departure transfer to the airport for your flight home.

If you have friends who are not walkers interested in this itinerary, we also offer it with a touring programme.

Once again we have the pleasure and privilege of writing to say THANK YOU for our recent holiday… Walking in the High Pyrenees. The core programme of walks was excellent. Our guide in Andorra was well experienced in dealing with walkers of varying fitness and ability. The walk starting and returning to the French Pyrenean town of Ax-les-Thermes was a pleasant ramble well guided by Sandrine. Our Soldeu hotel was most comfortable with superb views of the surrounding mountains. Our guide Pau was patient, good humoured and particularly knowledgeable about Catalan history and our coach driver Jose Luis is a driver par excellence! his negotiation of the narrow twisting roads up to and the down from Monserrat was faultless: we knew we were in safe hands every time we boarded that coach. Overall another great holiday provided by Preferred Travel Services. Thank you.

Mr M & Ms F, Glasgow

Andorra surpassed all expectations. Hotel friendly, Tour Guide excellent and so was our driver. It is always enjoyable on your holidays to meet with interesting people from all over the UK.

Mr & Mrs G, Exeter

All walks were good.

Mrs M, Tyne & Wear

Really enjoyed walks. Guide excellent.

Ms W, Avon

We have marked against our expectations with "5" exceeding expectation, so we were very happy with our holiday. It may be a hard act to follow. We would be prepared to go back to Soldeu but not if the walks are all the same. We enjoyed the variety of experience provided within the time ie it was a good mix of walking in wonderful scenery and culture without being over organised, time available to "do our own thing".

Mrs W, Aberdeenshire

Nuba Hotel Coma Ruga - a good choice. Might have been a bit warmer on the first night otherwise great. Friendly smiling and helpful staff. Overall a good hotel in a very good location for accessing the beach walks and rail station (free wine with meal was much appreciated.) Sports Hotel: very comfortable hotel and very well appointed. A good range of food and very well presented.
